Identity
Aria Laxer
My artwork explores the fragile and unreliable nature of memory, questioning how much of what we remember is real and how much has been distorted over time. The inquiry question guiding this piece is: How much of our memories are real, and how much are distorted? I aim to show memory not as a fixed record, but as a reconstruction shaped by emotion, time, and imagination.

etude
Sahana Jha
As an oboist, I often find myself practicing into the late hours on etudes, smaller pieces meant to aid in honing a technical skill rather than a soft or gentle melody. In doing so, I was reminded of a feeling of 'echoing', wherein one knows that they're liked but not loved, less beautiful but more attainable. Having felt the same way previously in several friendships, I opted to interpret this unique emotion through a lens of unrequited love, maintaining the same musical themes through the poem.

Childhood memories of following the fish's movements in a restaurant with an aquarium/fish tank to kill time came to mind when I took the original picture. The feeling of time passing peacefully and slowly, like the fish's movements was what inspired me.

Bulky&Snowy
Chloe Hu
This piece was inspired because of a policy that went across Beijing, where I live. Dogs over a specific size are not allowed to live inside urban areas, not because of anything else, but simply that larger dogs look scary, and people worry that they might get bitten. So I created this video to say that you can be who you want, and not decided by your looks. I used dogs int he video, but the same goes with people. It's you on the inside that decides your identity, not just your appearance.

Stardust Plate

I was inspired by the movie The Little Prince; a movie about a girl re-discovering the story of a little prince who travels the universe. This movie is one that deeply resonated with me as a child, as I saw the soullessness in many of the adults around me who could not understand my imagination and my need to be a child and explore. Being a handful as a child led me to having a jam-packed schedule to avoid my childishness on my parents part. The Little Prince showed me it was okay to stay and in touch and love my imagination.

belonging
This Body of Mine
Ally Zlatar
As an immigrant the value of cultural identity can be constantly influx. This piece is an autoethnographic painting that delves into the realm of transcendental migration and displacement. It strives to capture the essence of my artist's journey and exploration of belonging, identity, and the pervasive emotion of fearfulness. The piece serves as a visual metaphor for my constant state of movement and adaptation, mirroring the ever-changing nature of life and my continuous search for a place to call home. Sometimes it is the nation we have our roots in, and other times it is where the wind takes us. The dichotomy creates a pervasive feeling of liminality for those such as myself who have this flux of cultural belonging.

The painting depicts the struggle and pain of African mothers, capturing the emotional depth of their experiences. I created it years ago (2021) to convey the resilience and strength that defines them, amidst adversity I was using oil paint on canvas must have added a rich, textured quality to the piece. The medium really brings out the emotional depth you were aiming to convey.

fragments of identity
gilbert loutfi
this piece is inspired by the fact that a person\s personality is forged by fragments of events and facts throughout his life that finally compose his own identity, and that he will leave once again at the end for the other life
